Summary

Seinfeld’s dilemma of truth versus compassion was compared to a Talmudic debate about how to complement an ugly bride. While both values are considered very important in the Jewish tradition , Beit Hilllel claimed that you cannot offend someone for the sake of sticking to the truth. An interesting rebuttal was made that this will lead to a phony polite society where you can never know what others are thinking of you (as illustrated in the Seinfeld ugly baby episode).

I agree with Jerry because it would not have been fair to Kramer because it most likely would have ruined Kramer’s image of his girlfriend.  Kramer, nor his girlfriend, deserve to have their relationship ruined because Jerry does not like Kramer’s girlfriend.

    That makes sense, but it’s just a girlfriend. It’s not like they’re married. Maybe she isn’t the right person for Kramer, so why shouldn’t Jerry let him know?

I think that you should have told them in some regard, however, I can understand why it would hurt somebody’s feelings if they were to tell their friend that they do not like their girlfriend. I think it is a very fine line of telling and not telling, but I think in this case I would agree with Jerry because all it could do was hurt feelings.

I Agree with jerry because you don’t want to hurt their feelings and its not your place to talk trash about someone else’s girlfriend. It could either ruin their relationship or your friendship.

I think Jerry should tell the truth because of how close they are, and the conversation should be positive and comforting. If they were less close, maybe not but in this case they are best friends, so yes, he should tell him the truth.

I agree with Seinfeld to an extent. If a girl makes my friend happy, it is not my job to dictate his or her life. This said, I feel that it is not right to lie to them. Additionally, it is not right to wait until they break up. This is my take on the situation.

I agree with Kramer. It’s not the same as a bride. Marriage is a very holy thing, and someone on the day of their marriage is considered as if they are beautiful by virtue of the special day, even if they are not actually good-looking. A girlfriend, on the other hand, is not someone you’re married to, and it’s not a permanent relationship. A break-up is not the same as a divorce, and since it’s a lot less holy of a relationship, I think it’s OK to tell someone what you think if their partner in this situation.
